At the Edge of Fragrance
As a storyteller I communicate with my hands translating stories into clay. My sculptures are autobiographical narratives sometimes with hand-built soft slab female
Mexican/Italian full figures, flower mounds, platters and animal imagery in clay, such as Java Sparrow Finch birds that are symbols of humanity, facets of myself or of others to me. My ceramic sculptures serve as spirit guides that manifest intentions, relieve anxieties, and whisper secrets. As a daughter of a florist, flowers are intrinsic to my sculptures. They create a dialogue internal to my work. Flowers are always present and dying at monumental life changing ceremonies in my life. Flowers represent to me the fragility of a life that has touched and grown into mine to me. I enjoy their bright unique colors in the short life of a dying flower wishing they would bloom forever. Currently I am working on a series titled “Flower Beds” representing the loss of my mother to cancer. In searching for solacement I am making bright ceramic flowers, capturing and honor that fleeting moment of life with my hands in clay much like the cemetery porcelain flowers of southern France. My technique of throwing on the wheel and hand building female figures and assembling each flower allows a personal connection with my clay and forms. This intimacy is imperative for me to process my emotions and stories into clay and create meaning with images, which empowers me in all aspects of my life. The manipulating of my clay not only creates sculptures, but also “builds” me as an artist, an educator, and a woman.
